Acids have become a cornerstone of modern skincare, yet the sheer variety available on the market can make it difficult to determine which is right for your specific concerns. When used correctly, these ingredients can transform skin texture, tone, and clarity. However, understanding the nuances of each acid—and when to apply them—is essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.
In aesthetic dermatology, we often look at how topical interventions influence the skin's structural integrity. Whether we are managing general rejuvenation or preparing the skin for advanced procedures, the role of hydroxy acids is significant.
Glycolic Acid: The Deep Rejuvenator
Glycolic acid is perhaps the most well-known Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA). Derived from sugarcane, it has a small molecular size that allows it to penetrate the skin’s layers more deeply than other AHAs. Its primary function is to aid cellular turnover and support the production of new collagen.
By strengthening the structure of the skin’s fibroblasts, glycolic acid effectively reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Because it alters the skin's surface to reveal fresh cells, it is vital to use a broad-spectrum SPF daily, as the skin becomes more susceptible to UV damage. The way we manipulate collagen and tissue planes through topical acids and clinical treatments is a key focus in aesthetic research, particularly regarding how collagen deposition affects long-term skin health.
Mandelic Acid: The Solution for Oily Skin
Also an AHA, mandelic acid is derived from bitter almonds. Unlike glycolic acid, it is particularly well-suited for problematic or oily skin types. It possesses natural antibacterial properties, making it an excellent choice for those prone to congestion. Mandelic acid works to deeply cleanse impurities from the pores and regulate excess sebum (oil) production, helping to manage shine without causing excessive irritation.
Lactic Acid: Gentle Exfoliation and Hydration
Lactic acid is a milder AHA, traditionally derived from milk but often produced synthetically for modern formulations. It is famous for being the "gentle" acid, making it ideal for sensitive skin or those new to chemical exfoliation.
Lactic acid works by breaking down the "glue" between dead skin cells on the surface, but it also acts as a humectant, helping the skin retain moisture. This dual action keeps the complexion soft and supple. This balance of exfoliation and hydration is particularly important when addressing accelerated biological aging and xerosis, where maintaining the skin barrier is just as important as cellular renewal.
Salicylic Acid: The Pore Specialist
Unlike the previously mentioned AHAs, salicylic acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA). Derived from willow bark, it is oil-soluble, which allows it to penetrate deep into the pores to dissolve the "sticky" bonds of sebum and dead skin that lead to breakouts.
Salicylic acid is highly effective for managing pore-clogging conditions and excessive oiliness. Because it refines the skin's surface and clears debris, it is often used to address enlarged pores and texture irregularities in various rejuvenation protocols.
Choosing the Right Approach
When incorporating acids into your routine, the goal is to support the skin's natural functions rather than overwhelm them.
- For premature ageing and fine lines: Glycolic and Lactic acids are excellent for promoting a smoother, firmer appearance.
- For congestion and breakouts: Salicylic and Mandelic acids offer the antibacterial and oil-regulating properties needed to maintain clarity.
Regardless of which acid you choose, consistency and sun protection are the keys to achieving a healthy, radiant complexion. Always introduce new active ingredients gradually to ensure your skin remains resilient and balanced.
