Glycyrrhetinic Acid

Glycyrrhetinic Acid

Glycyrrhetinic Acid

Overview

Glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) is a bioactive compound derived from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice). It is known for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.

Clinical Evidence

Psoriasis Treatment

In a study, GA was incorporated into nanoparticles for the treatment of psoriasis, demonstrating enhanced immune regulation and anti-inflammatory effects. The system showed significant efficacy in suppressing psoriatic inflammatory infiltration by blocking STAT3 phosphorylation, inhibiting IL-23 signaling, and reducing IL-17 release. Multifunctional self-assembled nanoparticles loaded into immunomodulatory microneedles for synergistic therapy of psoriasis.

UVB-Induced Skin Damage

Another study highlighted the protective effects of 18β-GA against UVB-induced skin damage. It was shown to alleviate photodamage in skin fibroblasts and reduce the expression of proteins linked to the MyD88/MAPK signaling pathway, indicating its potential as a therapeutic agent for skin protection. 18β-Glycyrrhetinic acid reduces skin damage from UVB exposure by inhibiting the MyD88/MAPK signaling pathway.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

GA has been shown to mitigate dermal and nasal inflammation through its anti-inflammatory effects. A study demonstrated that GA-loaded nano-sponges significantly reduced inflammatory biomarkers and improved tissue architecture in animal models. Glycyrrhetinic acid and ethyl acetate extract from Glycyrrhiza glabra mitigates dermal and nasal inflammation: mechanistic insights and nano-formulation strategy.

Conclusion

Glycyrrhetinic acid is a promising ingredient in dermatological formulations due to its multifaceted therapeutic effects, particularly in inflammatory skin conditions.
