Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Dr Martyn King | Cosmedic Skin Clinic | Staffordshire

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is an advanced regenerative treatment that uses the body's own natural growth factors to stimulate tissue repair, collagen production, and cellular regeneration. Often referred to as the "vampire facial" when used for skin rejuvenation, PRP is widely used in aesthetic medicine to improve skin quality, support hair restoration, and enhance healing.

By concentrating platelets from a small sample of your own blood, PRP delivers a high concentration of growth factors directly to the treatment area, helping to rejuvenate the skin and stimulate natural repair processes.

Summary

  • Downtime: Minimal (mild redness and swelling for 24–72 hours)
  • Discomfort: Mild to moderate

How it works

PRP therapy begins with a small blood sample being taken from your arm, similar to a routine blood test.

The blood is then placed into a specialised centrifuge, which separates and concentrates the platelets from the other blood components. These platelets contain powerful growth factors that play a key role in tissue repair and regeneration.

The concentrated platelet-rich plasma is then carefully introduced into the treatment area through injection and/or combined with microneedling depending on the treatment plan.

PRP works by:

  • Stimulating collagen and elastin production
  • Supporting tissue repair and regeneration
  • Improving blood supply to treated tissues
  • Encouraging healthy cellular activity
  • Promoting natural healing responses

Because the treatment uses your own blood products, there is minimal risk of allergy or rejection.

Advice from Dr Martyn King

Dr Martyn King, Cosmedic Skin Clinic, Staffordshire

"PRP is one of the most natural regenerative treatments available because it harnesses your body's own healing mechanisms. Rather than introducing synthetic products, we use concentrated growth factors derived from your own blood to stimulate repair and rejuvenation. It is particularly effective for patients seeking gradual, natural-looking improvements in skin quality or hair density."
