Dermal Fillers

Dr Martyn King | Cosmedic Skin Clinic | Staffordshire

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments designed to restore lost volume, enhance facial contours, improve symmetry, and soften deeper lines and folds. Most modern dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found within the skin that attracts and retains moisture.

When performed by an experienced medical practitioner, dermal filler treatments can provide subtle, natural-looking rejuvenation while maintaining facial harmony and expression.

Summary

  • Procedure time: 30–60 minutes
  • Downtime: Minimal (most patients return to normal activities immediately)
  • Discomfort: Mild to moderate
  • Anaesthetic: Topical anaesthetic and/or lidocaine-containing fillers
  • Onset of results: Immediate
  • Peak/final results: Usually within 24 hours, maybe longer if swelling/bruising develops
  • Duration: Typically 6–18 months depending on product and treatment area
  • Maintenance: Usually single treatment and repeated when results worn off

Prices vary depending on the treatment area, product selection, and volume required.

💡 Final cost is confirmed after consultation based on individual treatment goals, facial anatomy, and product requirements.

How it works

Dermal fillers work by restoring volume beneath the skin, improving facial contours and supporting areas affected by age-related volume loss. Hyaluronic acid fillers also attract water, helping to improve hydration and skin quality.

Following a detailed consultation and facial assessment, carefully selected filler products are placed into specific areas using fine needles and/or cannulas. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient's facial structure, aesthetic goals, and natural proportions.

Results are visible immediately, although some swelling and minor bruising may occur during the first few days.

What areas can be treated

Dermal fillers can be used to treat and enhance a variety of facial areas, including:

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Jawline
  • Nasolabial folds (nose-to-mouth lines)
  • Marionette lines (mouth-to-chin lines)
  • Temples
  • Tear troughs (selected patients)
  • Nose reshaping (Non-surgical rhinoplasty)
  • Facial asymmetry correction
  • Non-surgical facial contouring and rejuvenation
  • Hands

You may be suitable if you:

  • Wish to restore facial volume loss
  • Want to enhance facial features such as lips, cheeks, chin, or jawline
  • Have deep lines or folds that are present at rest
  • Are seeking a non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment
  • Are in good general health

You may not be suitable if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an active skin infection or cold sore in the treatment area
  • Have certain autoimmune conditions or severe allergies
  • Have unrealistic expectations regarding treatment outcomes

A full medical consultation is required before treatment.

Pre-treatment advice

To minimise the risk of bruising and swelling:

  • Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours before treatment
  • Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medication unless prescribed
  • Avoid high-dose fish oils and blood-thinning supplements where appropriate
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Attend with clean skin and minimal makeup
  • Do not plan treatment immediately before a holiday or important event
  • Inform your practitioner of any previous filler treatments, allergies, or medical conditions

If you are prone to cold sores, preventative antiviral medication may be recommended before lip treatment.

Post-treatment advice

Following treatment:

  • Avoid touching or massaging the treated area unless instructed
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours
  • Avoid excessive heat including saunas, steam rooms, and sunbeds for 48 hours
  • Use cool compresses if mild swelling occurs
  • Contact the clinic if you develop any unexpected symptoms or signs

Most swelling settles within several days, although final results may take up to two weeks to fully develop.

Advice from Dr Martyn King

Dr Martyn King, Cosmedic Skin Clinic, Staffordshire

"Successful dermal filler treatment is about enhancing facial harmony rather than simply adding volume. Every face is unique, and treatment should respect natural anatomy, proportions, and movement. My aim is always to create balanced, elegant results that look refreshed and natural rather than overfilled or artificial."
